Qt Quick 1.0 officially launched

Nokia has launched Qt Quick 1.0 today. Qt Quick is a collection of three technologies:

* QtDeclarative - the native library in Qt delivering native integration and the Qt Quick UI runtime
* QML - the Qt MetaObject Language, allowing declaration of User Interfaces and Experiences
* Qt Creator support for QML-based projects and code integration.

For the last year, QML and QtDeclarative has been available to both early adopters as well as mainstream developers through code pushed to gitorious as well as Qt 4.7.0 and 4.7.1 releases. Today the final piece of the puzzle has been launched: Qt Creator with the Qt Quick Designer.

Qt Quick Designer is a WYSIWYG editor for QML UI's, allowing you to visually create and arrange your UI's while staying in perfect sync with your QML code. This does not use a separate generative step like Qt Designer did – but directly manipulates your QML code. You can get Qt Creator along with the Qt Quick Designer and all the other features supporting Qt Quick from the downloads page.

In the near future some additional features for Qt Quick will be made available. This includes use-case specific elements for pinching touch interaction, free form touch interaction, support for Right-To-Left layouting and many other features and suggestions.

The team has also started last fall to build Qt Quick components for MeeGo and Symbian. While work is still continuing at a brisk pace on the MeeGo style, the Symbian style has now been fully transitioned to gitorious.org, allowing anyone to try it out on their Symbian ^3 device. This makes creating new Apps with native look and feel a lot easier and obsoletes the task of each developer having to creating reusable elements such as buttons, ListItems and so forth. Prime your ‘git clone’ and head to http://qt.gitorious.org/qt-components. To provide feedback you can use bugreports, and if you want to discuss you can use the mailing list or IRC.

Official Android 2.3.2 update for Samsung I9000 Galaxy S leaks

Yesterday the official Gingerbread update for the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S leaked in the XDA Developers forum. This means that the Galaxy S will indeed get the Gingerbread treatment, as we reported this weekend.

Note that this is the 2.3.2 version of Android and not version 2.3.3 that was released for the Google Nexus S and Nexus One earlier last week.

The leaked source code is still in a beta stage and some people report that either it's not working properly, or they can't get it to work at all. For most users though there seem to be no problems.

Update, we already gave it a spin, check out our first impressions and benchmarks here.

Nevertheless, approach with caution and read the XDA forum carefully before doing anything. Happy flashing!

Best of all, devs have succeeded in rooting the software already.

Samsung's Exynos 4210 gaming side shown off at the GDC 2011

The Samsung Orion SoC (Exynos 4210), packing a dual-core 1Ghz ARM Cortex A9 CPU and the Mali-400 graphics, has been making comfortable at this year?s Games Developers Conference. There, the Exynos 4210 was showcased runing 3D games in 1080p@60fps.

An experimental platform using the same chip found inside the Galaxy S II (a dual-core 1Ghz ARM Cortex A9 CPU and the Mali-400 graphics) was used for demoes at the ARM's booth at the GDC 2011. The Exynos 4210 didn't even blink while running a complex 3D game demo in 1080p at 60 fps.

Amazing, indeed. An ARM representative even said that if it wasn?t for the limitations of the HDMI v1.3 port that was used, they could have outputed the same game in stereoscopic 3D in 1080p. Unfortunately, that's only possible over the latest HDMI v1.4 standard.

The Samsung Galaxy S II will be the first one to feature the Exynos 4210 SoC. The phone is expected to be released in late May for around ?650. Some regional versons will make use of a Tegra 2 chip instead.

LG promises at least one next-version update for each Optimus

E-mailWritten by Administrator Tuesday, 01 March 2011 11:17

lg-promisses-updatesWhat you expect when you buy an android smartphone of your choice ? Well it could be anything in your concern but you may want your smartphone to upgrade after you unwrap it from the box, isn’t it ? But at that initial stage of buying that android device doesn’t assures you that if it will ever be updated or not. On the other hand, Google casts foremost new edition of Android every six months however there is no way of assuring that your device will ever obtain a newer firmware than what it came with out of the box. And this often happens that the bestseller smartphones are able to get an update in near time but failures are spotted backwards.

With these things keeping in mind, LG is committed to endow with as a minimum one next-edition revise to all of its Optimus smartphones. Apparently, LG's Director of Global Communications, Kenneth Hong made a statement that LG's "viewpoint is to be proficient to put forward at least a one-level raise for all Optimus smartphones pioneered in 2011 and ahead of"

For example if you buy an LG Optimus which runs on Froyo then your smartphone will be able to get at minimum a one-level upgrade which will make this smartphone to run on Gingerbread. Moreover, if you buy a Gingerbread operated mobile phone of LG then you will get an update for that too.

At this instant such a pledge is certainly a good move and a positive approach but it's besides a solemn obligation by the firm. LG has been dishonorable on the subject of making available after-sales software renewals to its devices and this might be the indication of a big twist in the company's values and strategies to implement in the upcoming time.

Regrettably, there aren’t any words to verify that if the update will take how much time to hit the devices, as it wasn’t a part of the conversation by Ken Hong. But what do you think that at least one software upgrade seems to be enough for your smartphone to not let itself chase behind the smartphones which are really damn hot ?

Important: Do bear this in mind that word of honor given by LG for the update is only assured for carrier-free never-locked versions of the LG phones.

Here's the Samsung Galaxy S on Gingerbread, benchmarked

Our hands were itching to try the leaked Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S and to give it a spin to see what's what. The update doesn't bring anything spectacular in terms of looks; only the notification bar has changed icons and looks, but the rest of its is basically the same old TouchWiz 3.0.

The new version of the Samsung custom launcher that will launch on the Galaxy S II is sadly unavailable here. At least you get the download center that Gingerbread brings. Plus the leaked ROM feels surprisingly bugless for a beta release.

We also ran a few benchmarks to see if it's noticeably faster than its Froyo-running twin brother. Here are the results:

Compared to a Froyo-powered Galaxy S, these results are obviously better, which is pretty good considering that this is not a final version of Gingerbread.

All these videos were shot on the Nokia N8 to showcase both the abilities of the filmmakers and Nokia?s flagship camera phone. We?ve also seen what the N8 can do in the hands of professionals - in case you missed them, check out The Commuter and the stop-motion short Dot.

Carbide.ui Symbian Theme Edition 4.0 released

SYMBIAN ^3 and S60 3rd & 5th EDITION DISCUSSION FORUMS - MOST RECENT TOPICS
Carbide.ui Symbian Theme Edition 4.0 releasedForum Nokia has released new version 4.0 of Carbide.ui Symbian Theme Edition. The latest version delivers a new UX that has been designed to boost the productivity of theme designers. The UX was created by going back to first principles and rethinking how designers can most efficiently create themes. This has resulted in changes that include:
Richer Component View: With faster refreshing, improved iconography, status indication, and filtering, reviewing components is now faster and better aligned to theme-development needs.
Unified Properties View: All properties of a component -- and the tools to manipulate them -- are now in one place. New tools, such as a slicer to create nine-part components, are also available.
Tabbed Preview: Preview screens are now grouped into convenient tabs, making it easier to find and display specific previews. This, in turn, enables the impact of component changes on the UI to be evaluated speedily.
Colour and Gradient Editor: An improved colour-selection tool makes editing common colours and gradients straightforward. Get an instant preview of any change, then use the colour picker to sample colours from any source.
Export to PDF: Export all preview screens to a PDF document -- at full resolution. Designers can now easily evaluate and share theme ideas without having to first install them on a device.
Automatic Updates: Whenever updates to Carbide.ui become available, an automatic alert is shown in the tool. Then, a single click is all that's needed to get the latest features and functions.
