All right, so we were wrong in our claim that there was no way that the iPad could arrive in India by January 28. Although we have received no official notification, Apple’s India site and the BSNL site have gone up with the prices and 3G data plans for the gizmo that set the world on fire in 2010. Yes, it is a late arrival, but the prices are likely to prove a pleasant surprise – Rs 27,900 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only version, Rs 32,900 for the 32GB one, and Rs 37,900 for the 64GB one. In the Wi-Fi and 3G category, the prices are: Rs 34,900 for the 16GB version, Rs 39,900 for the 32GB one, and Rs 44,900 for the 64 GB one. All of which are significantly than the Rs 32,000-Rs 50,000 range that most pundits had predicted for the devices. And well, we were right in saying that the iPad could not come at the Rs 26,000 price tag that some people were quoting.
Of the providers supporting the device (and we have not received information about them yet, although Vodafone, Airtel and BSNL are rumoured to be the troika), BSNL have got off the mark fastest with the 3G data plans for the device. The service provider has both prepaid and postpaid options for the iPad. The prepaid options are Rs 999 for unlimited usage for a month, Rs 599 for a month for a maximum of 6GB usage and Rs 99 for a day of unlimited usage. The postpaid plan is limited to a single one – Rs 100 for activation, followed by Rs 999 per month for unlimited usage. That is what we have for the moment, folks. More when we get information. As of now, we are delighted at having being proven wrong. The iPad might be late, but is very welcome at this prices in India!
