Last week we uncovered news that the mysterious data leak problem that was plaguing certain Windows 7 phones was caused by a 3rd party app. Well we now can reveal that the culprit was no other than Yahoo!
The discovery was made at first by a coder by the name of “Rafael Rivera,” who having been a victim of the data leak himself decided to take apart a series of IMAP packets that were sent to and from his Windows 7 Phone.
He discovered after doing a series of math calculations that Yahoo! was sending 25 times more data than it needed to. If this wasn’t proof enough Microsoft have also owned up to the fact that Yahoo! was to blame.
The official verdict was that inefficiency existed in the synchronization of email between the Windows 7 Mail client and Yahoo! Mail, but the problem seems to have only affected a small percentage of users.
Microsoft is working alongside Yahoo! to develop a fix, which should be rolled out in the next few weeks. In the meantime, for those who are affected by the bug you can do the following to help:
On the Windows 7 Start screen, click on the arrow at the top rightChoose “Settings” from the listChoose “email & accounts”Choose “Yahoo! Mail”Click on the setting under “Download new content”Select a less frequent setting. If you are using the default setting (every 2 hours), change this setting to “manually”Click on the setting under “Download email from”Select a shorter time range. If you are using the default setting (the last 2 weeks), change this setting to “the last 7 days”
