HTC Merge: HTC’s first CDMA Android world phone

HTC has announced that it will be launching its first CDMA Android world phone beginning this spring. The HTC Merge is expected to be available through multiple North American carriers and will be powered by Android 2.2.

The smartphone will include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and features a large 3.8-inch touchscreen display in addition to a five megapixel camera which includes auto-focus and flash. The camera also includes a camcorder feature allowing for the capture of high-definition 720p video.

The HTC Merge has definitely been designed with the business traveller in mind as demonstrated by its “world phone” moniker and support for Exchange ActiveSync. That’s not to say it hasn’t been designed for the average person as well, especially someone who wants to stay connected to their social networks. The phone will include HTC FriendStream which will allow users to receive updates from Flickr, Facebook and Twitter.

Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC Americas, commented on the phone by saying:

HTC Merge goes official, will be offered by multiple US carriers

After the HTC Merge images leaked a while ago, now the Taiwanese company finally makes the phone official. The device is also HTC's first Android-based CDMA/GSM dual mode phone or "world phone" as they call it States-side.

The HTC Merge runs Android, and naturally will come with HTC?s custom Sense UI on top of it. The device packs a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a capacitive 3.8-inch touchscreen. At the back the Merge touts a 5MP camera capable of 720p video recording.

Pricing is still unknown, as well as major hardware specifications, so maybe HTC will get those details out soon. What we know, though, is that the Merge will be available this spring for multiple US carriers. We bet Verizon and Sprint are definitely on that list.
