Skyfire, Facebook for Android updated

Categories: Android, Apps, Software, smartphones

The last couple of days have been busy for Android users with two of the most popular applications on the Android market, the Skyfire browser and the official Facebook app for Android getting updates.  While both seem minor rather than major updates, they each add some features to the existing package. Both are available for free download from the Android Market.

In the case of Facebook, the update (taking the app from version 1.5 to 1.5.1) adds Facebook Deals to the app, allowing users to get information about interesting deals and discounts once they log in to Facebook Places (alas, India is not supported yet), and also fixes a number of bugs. Chat and push notifications continue to be available for Android 2.2 and above devices, although judging by our experience and those of other users, they continue to be inconsistent. Clearly all those bugs have not been fixed yet, which means another update (sigh).

Meanwhile, Skyfire, the browser best known for its super handling of Flash and video, has received an update, taking it from version 3.0 to 3.2. The most significant change here is the addition of a searchbox to the top of toolbar, which lets users get search results not just from Google, but also Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and also videos. The browser has also built on its video strength, adding support for more sites and video players, including the BBC’s iPlay in the UK. There has been a lot of debugging done too, especially in the areas of crashing, download and saving of files. The new searchbox is cool, but we still wish Skyfire were faster, although it remains the best option for viewing online video within a browser.

Ovi Store gets updated, Nokia Diagnostics now for Symbian^3

The Nokia Ovi Store is getting an over-the-air update today, which will enable full Arabic support for the store and Qt based app installation. What this means is that apps created for Symbian 5th edition and Maemo will now be compatible with Symbian^3.

This is great news for the newest Symbian, because it opens a whole new window of content to the handful of phones that run it. And given the fact that the Ovi Store is way behind the Android Market and the iOS AppStore, this should be taken as a serious upgrade.

Keep in mind that an error with the update may occur and, should that happen, Nokia suggests that you hit Try Again and continue hassle-free.

In other related news the Nokia Diagnostics app has just been released in Beta form for Symbian^3. It's exactly the same as on the 5th edition and offers all the test it did before. Nokia are keeping it clean and simple here, why change something that's already good?

But as with the Ovi Store update, Nokia has a note about the Diagnostics app, as well. If you're using the N8, C6 or C6-01 you'll need to update your firmware from PR1.0 to PR1.1.

Finally, the Diagnostics application has been updated too, in order to fix the front-facing camera issue it obviously had before.

Swype for S60 5th Edition updated and with new language packs

Swype for Symbian has received an update to a new version v1.0.16481 and new language packs.

According to Nokia Beta Labs, "an awful lot of changes have been made to the application since the last update, not the least of which is better support for language downloads and language performance improvements. You'll also find the Copy and Paste now appear in the Settings menu as well as the Edit Layer, and a lot of bugs have been quashed."

Several new language packs have been published over the past week for use on any device running Swype. This makes the current list of available languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French (Canadian), French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (European), Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai and Vietnamese.
